John is a strong supporter of the Collaborative Practice, especially for divorces. He believes that for a majority of the divorces, it is possible to have the couple resolve their divorce issues without having to go through the stress and trauma of court motions, hearings, and a trial. This often results in a healthier post-divorce relationship, which can be very important when children are involved. John was involved in eastern Washington's first collaborative divorce case. He has continued this groundbreaking trend by being one of the most active collaborative divorce attorneys in the region, and now limits his divorce practice to only collaborative law cases.

Credentials: John is a member of the Washington State Bar Association, and it's Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution sections. John is also a member of the Spokane County Bar Association and it's Family Law Section.

Group Memberships: John is member of the International Association of Collaborative Professionals (IACP), Collaborative Professionals of Washington (CPW), and Spokane County Collaborative PRofessionals (SCCP). John is a co-founder of both CPW and SCCP, and served as an officer and board member of CPW for over 4 years, and has continuously served as an officer and board member of SCCP since it's founding. These two organizations are active in the effort to educate both the public and the legal profession about Collaborative Practice, and the revolutionary way it helps individuals resolve their divorce issues.

The focus of my practice is to help families overcome conflict without having to go to court. I have been practicing law since 1992 and have spent many of those years doing trial work. At some point during my career, I realized that the traditional judicial process was not helping the pain and suffering of families who were experiencing conflict. Even when we “won” our cases, by the time we were done with the process, my clients were usually traumatized and felt betrayed by a system that had failed them. This was particularly true for clients who came from other countries and did not speak English. Early in 2002, I began to explore mediation and negotiations as an alternative method to help
